What will you learn?
You'll learn to fight

We teach you how to punch, kick, chop, poke, grab, block, throw, joint lock, and choke.  The goal is to make sure that  you're the one who goes home safe after an altercation, and that you do that in the most efficient and force appropriate way.  Our training puts equal value on the specific techniques as well as the concepts the techniques are meant to make possible. We are not concerned with winning the fight as much as not losing it.

Do you teach grappling?
Yes and No.

Yes, in that grappling (groundwork) is part and parcel of Jujitsu.  If you end up on the ground with your opponent, you'll have the skills to win, AND GET BACK UP.

No, in that our doctrine is to remain on our feet as much as possible.  We don't teach you to drag your opponent down to the ground in order to fight him.  In our training and practice we always assume "plus 1" and "plus Weapon".  That means they may have a friend who's about to kick you n the head, or an edged weapon you didn't see.

Do you use kata?
No

Every technique is practiced with a partner, in both offensive and defensive roles.  You will learn to deal hands on with real energy from a real person

What about the esoteric side?
In the process of training and practicing you'll learn about centering and balance (keeping your own and taking away theirs), Ki extension, staying calm and relaxed, breathing, efficient movement, and more.

What's a typical practice like?
Generally we start with 10 or 15 minutes of striking as a warm up, then class pairs off  with partners for practice of  the techniques we're working on.

Technique training will usually consist of working with one principal movement, but practicing it with several variations.  Classes are generally taught in "arcs" of one to two weeks during which we look at a movement from both an offensive and defensive side.  We explore what happens when it goes wrong or doesn't work, how terrain and situation affect it, and what might come after it.

Will I get hurt?
Maybe a little . . .

Remember that what you're learning is a battlefield art. While we never practice with the intent of injuring our partners, their will be bumps, bruises, brush burns and the like.

New members are definitely NOT beaten up to "see how tough" they are.  The techniques and force applied are skill level appropriate.  Our goal is to share knowledge and learn together.  We want you to want to come to practice!
